Thomas J. King was the commander of the Federated Suns forces defending Chesterton during the late First Succession War.[1]

By the dawn of the 29th Century, the Capellan Confederation had managed to conquer every world within one jump of Chesterton and had dispatched emissaries to negotiate the planet's surrender. While the Capellans pointed out the dire position they had Chesterton in, Leftenant General King's response was blunt: he claimed to have a stockpile of cobalt-laced fission weapons which he promised to use "the moment the first Cappie pinko set foot on Chesterton soil." When the astounded Capellans questioned King's sanity, he once more responded by simply stating "I know how much your Chancellor loves surprises."[1]
While King never definitively proved that he possessed WMDs, follow-up investigations by the Capellan Maskirovka highlighted that King's troops were entrenched, disciplined, and fanatical in their determination to defend Federated Suns land in light of the recent Kentares Massacre. Furthermore, while the Capellans had cut off any means of escape from Chesterton, this only contributed to the fact that King's men had nothing left to lose. Considering all of this information in conjunction with its desire to take Chesterton intact, the Capellan Confederation ultimately decided to delay its invasion of the planet until an alternate means of conquest could be determined.[1]
