The Shoulders of Giants is a short story by Charles Gideon that was published in the twelfth issue of Shrapnel, the continuation of the previous history Protector of the Blood.
Plot summary[edit]
In the mining complex which housed the group of Kell Hounds and Clan Wolf-in-Exile refugees from the fall of Arc-Royal, Dara finds Lowella, his alumn, after hurtinga nother children in a fight. He ordered her to come with him and reproached her for having failed to broke the other kid's arm. The same day, Dara was called into a council of the refugees' leaders. He think it was about the children's fight, but it wasn't the case: they needed his help, because a suspicious DropShip was approaching their complex. As Dara is the only veteran warrior, they needed his advice. When the unknowns arrived, Dara and a group of armed refugees were awaiting them. The refugees' leader attempted to negotiate, but the newly arrived ones were pirates, and executed him, attacking the refugees. Dara led the defense against the pirates, fielding a small autocannon. after making blow the ground under the pirates, they lost their tanks and his single Mech was trapped, and soon, the pilot was killed. However, Dara uncovers, terrified, than a second pirate group had infiltrated into the complex.. where he had left Lowella to protect the refugees. He raced to save her, finding her wounded, but alive. Furious, he engages the pirates, making a slaughter until only one was alive. Dara, fatally wounded, asks the doctor to talk with Lowella, and asked her to remember him. She swears it, and he dies. Sometime later, Lowella, piloting the pirates' Mech, visits the monument to the fallen, included Dara, and says him goodbye before departing from the planet.
