Colonel Owen Boyle was the commander of the XIV Principes Guards, with the Republic of the Sphere, from at least 3145 to 3148.[1][2]

History[edit]

Formation of the XIV Principes Guards[edit]

A native of Elgin, Boyle was a distant descendant of Captain Edward T. Elgin, the planet's namesake. He was assigned command of the XIV Principes Guards, which was raised from and based on Elgin, on its establishment shortly before 3145. He pushed his troops hard during this period, keeping them constantly on the training fields, which yielded impressive results.[1][3]

He was also beloved by this troops, including the MechWarriors, who considered him both taskmaster and father figure.[2]

Departure from Elgin[edit]

In October 3148 Boyle and the Fourteenth were ordered off their wet home world of Elgin, with two Battalions sent to defend the much dryer world of Hall, and Boyle himself and the remaining Battalion sent to another world.[2] This caused disquiet amongst the Fourteenth's soldiers, who had expected to act as the defenders of their home world, however Colonel Boyle defended the orders on the basis the population of Hall also deserved protection. Such was Boyle's cult of personality within the unit, that these words were sufficient to quell any unrest, and the majority of the unit decamped for Hall shortly afterwards.[4]

This stripping of Elgin's defenses however resulted in it falling without a fight to the Capellan Confederation, by June 3149 once The Wall of Fortress Republic came down, lacking the strength of its native sons and daughters from the Fourteenth.[5]
