MediaWiki Upgrade 1.15.0 -> 1.18.0 (December 16, 2011)
Rebecca "Spreadsheet" Taylor
2011-12-15: Friday December 16, 2011 at approx 12pm PDT, I will be upgrading MediaWiki from version 1.15.0 to 1.18.0. The update will bring two years worth of better security, performance and features.  I have tested the update (which required a few fixes to our extensions and skins), but you never know what will go wrong.  Additionally, after the upgrade, I will be looking into better SPAM protection for the wiki. If you see anything out of place, please let me know. Nicjansma 01:09, 16 December 2011 (UTC)

Excuse me Nic, never done this before, but how do I get Rebecca "Spreadsheet" Taylor added to the Canon character's page? She's my late fiance and in Rec guide 12 Livewire2112 (talk) 21:14, 12 May 2021 (EDT)

2011-12-16: As of noon today, we are running MediaWiki 1.18.0.  I've noticed a couple things off, here's what I'm working on fixing:
+
: Hello, Livewire. I am reasonably sure that if the character is canon (I don't have #12 yet), they will be added in some fashion. However, if you want to prime the pump a bit, and are not familiar with wikis, I'd recommend opening a similar character (maybe from an earlier Guide) and starting an article named Rebecca Taylor, copying all the stuff (text & code) over into the new article, changing everything that doesn't pertain and adding what is needed. Some other Editor will be sure to follow behind and correct any mistakes or add needed info. Good luck, and I'll be looking for the article (and the Guide).--Revanche (talk|contribs) 21:21, 12 May 2021 (EDT)

While reviwing images without category, I found out this one File:Götterdämmerung (system) 3151.svg, which had no category nor information unlike the rest. I remember you have the "macro" that creates them and prepares them and adds a category because I asked this to help clean the "Uncategorized Files" page. No idea why this one got nuts. I added the information. Maybe it is because of the nice german spelling, but it is not the only planet like this. ::Yes Nick, that it is. I want to see which images are missing a real category as missing copyright is a "commonplace" not a category for me. ==Bug with Module:LuaTest==
 +
Hi Nic,<br>
 +
Module:LuaTest shows up as a blue link in Special:LonelyPages, but the page appears to be deleted. Adding it to User:Talvin/Project_Orphanage#Technical_Pages shows it as a red link, and it does not disappear from the Orphans when that cache refreshes overnight.  This is hardly a showstopper bug or even close, but it's odd. Talvin (talk) 10:57, 27 February 2022 (EST)
 +
: Strange, I couldn't find any way to make it disappear either.  Must be a side-effect of it being a LUA module.  Since it's not affecting anything else (that I can tell) I'll leave it for now, but if there's a pattern of this happening I can dig into it more.  Thanks for bringing to my attention! Nicjansma (talk) 22:26, 22 June 2022 (EDT)

Thanks for the suggestion and details Seth, but that requires a major change to our settings: not allowing any anonymous edits.  We've specifically chosen to allow anonymous edits (so far, though we could revisit this decision if we wanted).
+
Looks like a Bug.
Ideally, we would keep all of our existing settings:
+
:Category:Spanish language products is a double redirect, and it looks like it is locked up in the change propagation process since 26 March 2022.  It appears to need deletion.--Talvin (talk) 10:15, 14 June 2022 (EDT)
* Anonymous users have a Captcha for: creating an account, editing pages, creating pages, and adding urls (which is redundant since it's covered by editing pages)
+
: Thanks.  I had to set <code>$smwgChangePropagationProtection = false;</code> first, then remove the page.  <code>$smwgChangePropagationProtection</code> is now back to <code>true</code>. Nicjansma (talk) 22:32, 22 June 2022 (EDT)
* Regular users never see Captchas

We would ideally only want a single change to this configuration:

* Regular Users would only see a Captcha when adding a URL

Without your suggested major change (disallowing all anonymous edits), the configuration of ConfirmEdit doesn't allow this.

Unless we want to revisit allowing anonymous editing, I will start by looking into your suggested Anti-SPAM plugins.  Many thanks for the suggestions! Nicjansma 10:50, 19 December 2011 (PST)

ReCaptcha Alternatives
It looks like ReCaptcha isn't catching all the spam bots registering with the wiki and spamming their own talk pages with junk. The confirmedit extension page states that some spam bots have found a way around ReCaptcha and that it might be worth trying one of the other captcha types. There are several alternative on this Confirm Edit Extension page.--Seth 23:11, 23 December 2011 (PST)

Other ways to fight spam bots
:I suggest looking into ways to fight bots besides captchas. I've been running a MWO wiki since the beginning of November, and I haven't dealt with a spam bot yet. And my MW4 wiki was dealing with new bot accounts everyday, but since adding the following extensions, I haven't had one new bot account. Right now I am using the following mediawiki extensions; --Seth 23:37, 18 December 2011 (PST)

:::You're right, I don't think you can have all those setting require captchas for anonymous users and only have captchas on URLs for regular users. I hope those anti-spam extensions take care of the majority of the spam bots on their own.--Seth 11:18, 19 December 2011 (PST)

::::After enabling the plug-ins, I was looking for some sort of validation or log that they are working correctly.  Do you know if there's a log anywhere? Thanks again for all your suggestions! Nicjansma 13:23, 19 December 2011 (PST)

Slower?
Hi Nic, first off, thanks for the upgrade. I'm not entirely sure if this belongs here, but since the upgrade took place this site appears to be much slower for me. It's not an issue on regular article pages, but special pages (which I use often) have become painstakingly slow. It was normal for the Recent Changes page to take some 4 seconds to load, for example; now it takes 19 seconds. Mind you, this isn't really a problem. But if anything can be done, it would be nice. There is a project for this BattlTech Wiki that I would like to work on now that you're running a current version of Mediawiki, but requires the Semantic Bundle extension. Does this mean its pulling data from other pages to create this table?--Revanche (talk|contribs) 07:56, 24 December 2011 (PST)

::I can do one better than that, I can show you what it does. Using the same code with this extension installed, I made a sample page [ http://mwowiki.org/index.php?title=Timetable_Sample here]. It pulls data from other pages and displays it on its own page. The real benefit of this is that you can update multiple tables from the one subject page. On the :Category:BattleMechs, you might just want a list of all mechs and fast way to sort them by tonnage or to know which ones are clan or Inner Sphere, but on the timetable page you're just interested in knowing when all the mechs were frst made. It's basically a useful tool for displaying data in an organized way.--Seth 10:40, 24 December 2011 (PST)

Nic,

I just realized that the Sarna.net logo image (http://cfw.sarna.net/wiki/skins/common/images/battletechwiki_logo.gif) isn't loading. I consistently get an error under the Steiner skin.--Mbear(talk) 07:26, 2 January 2012 (PST)

:Hy i use the Marik skin and the error comes periodichaly at this time i can see the logo.--Doneve 08:34, 2 January 2012 (PST)

New Problem
I lost several times ago the left naviagion bar, it's periodicaly, but the problem occur sometimes.--Doneve 11:44, 2 January 2012 (PST)

:I can't say it's periodical, but every now and then, the left-side navigation bar is limited to a "Navigation" section containing Main page, Community portal, Current events, Recent changes, Random page & Help; then the "Search" field; then the "Toolbox" section. The oter sections are missing. There is no apparent pattern to when/if the left navbar shows completely or in this truncated form. Frabby 11:59, 2 January 2012 (PST)

::Oh i want to say, i had a log in problem ca. 2hours, was this a problem of the spambot attack on the site, when i can log in, at first i see a new attack, i became always erros on my login profile but this is gone.--Doneve 12:05, 2 January 2012 (PST)

Rebecca "Spreadsheet" Taylor[edit]

Excuse me Nic, never done this before, but how do I get Rebecca "Spreadsheet" Taylor added to the Canon character's page? She's my late fiance and in Rec guide 12 Livewire2112 (talk) 21:14, 12 May 2021 (EDT)

Hello, Livewire.
Update: The process has started, Livewire, thanks to Dmon.--Revanche (talk|contribs) 22:07, 12 May 2021 (EDT)

Potential issue in File:Götterdämmerung (system) 3151.svg[edit]

Hi Nik,

While reviwing images without category, I found out this one File:Götterdämmerung (system) 3151.svg, which had no category nor information unlike the rest. I remember you have the "macro" that creates them and prepares them and adds a category because I asked this to help clean the "Uncategorized Files" page. No idea why this one got nuts. I added the information. Maybe it is because of the nice german spelling, but it is not the only planet like this. Hope you can review and thanks in advance!--Pserratv (talk) 08:23, 5 November 2021 (EDT)

Perfect thanks! I had to hand-upload that file, because the umlaut caused issues with the initial batch. I think the rest were OK. Appreciate you added the category! Nicjansma (talk) 21:07, 8 November 2021 (EST)
No problem. Thanks to you for the macro and all other things you do for this page!--Pserratv (talk) 11:04, 9 November 2021 (EST)

Help with Uncategorized files[edit]

Hi Nik, I've seen that the file with only have this category: Category:Missing copyright information do not appear as Uncategorized... unfortunately, there are a lot of files with miss this but also other information and it is quite complex to find which ones only have the missing copyright... as those ones are missing some category else... Is there any way for you to help identify them?--Pserratv (talk) 08:21, 14 January 2022 (EST)

Hey Pserratv! Sorry I'm not fully following. You're looking for files that are *only* missing Copyright, but don't have any other categories assigned? Nicjansma (talk) 14:59, 17 January 2022 (EST)
Yes Nick, that it is. I want to see which images are missing a real category as missing copyright is a "commonplace" not a category for me. It is good to know they are missing copyright, but for me it is even more to know which ones are missing a place like being an image of a Free Worlds League character...--Pserratv (talk) 05:07, 19 January 2022 (EST)

Bug with Module:LuaTest[edit]

Hi Nic,
Module:LuaTest shows up as a blue link in Special:LonelyPages, but the page appears to be deleted.

Strange, I couldn't find any way to make it disappear either.

Looks like a Bug.[edit]

Category:Spanish language products is a double redirect, and it looks like it is locked up in the change propagation process since 26 March 2022. It appears to need deletion.--Talvin (talk) 10:15, 14 June 2022 (EDT)

Thanks. I had to set $smwgChangePropagationProtection = false; first, then remove the page. $smwgChangePropagationProtection is now back to true. Nicjansma (talk) 22:32, 22 June 2022 (EDT)
