: In English-speaking countries, it's considered part of the surname and sorted under V; it seems reasonable to assume the same thing happened elsewhere. Madness Divine (talk) 13:18, 13 November 2022 (EST)

:: Argh! And here was me assuming there would be a unified ruling on this - it never occurred to me that English-speaking countries would change the rules. The BT default style is CMOS, need to find out if that has something to say on the matter then. And even if not, since this is an English-speaking wiki if the V is really considered part of the name for sorting reasons Dmon and I need to revisit and fix this then. Thanks for the heads-up! : Hey guys, as both an academic and casual writer, this discussion really interests me and I hope you don't mind me chiming in. My first thought on how "von Richter" would be sorted was to compare it to Ludwig van Beethoven, who is also German, and in English-speaking countries it's always under B. I just checked the APA, MLA, and Chicago style manuals and they generally all say the same thing: 1) try to follow the preferences or traditions of the person/name's origin, and 2) use the first capitalized letter, which in most cases means ignoring the particle (van/von/der/de/de la/etc.) when alphabetizing. Here's where things get tricky: in the text before you start these MW5 missions, Elias calls himself Von Richter, but then once you start playing the 2nd mission, he refers to his house as "House Richter," which to me implies it should be sorted under R, and that PGI just goofed and should have made "von" lowercase (I've caught about 1000 other typos and errors, so this wouldn't surprise me). :: I used to do genealogy and was quite interested in how surnaming worked. I'll save the treatise on how it's evolved in my part of Canada beyond saying we had people with nobiliary particles, locatives, bynames, patronymics, clan names, and the-locals-can't-pronounce-it melding together under the British legal system.

:: I think it comes down to how one thinks of the population of the BattleTech universe. Were there pockets of pure linguistic culture or was it all one big melting pot as it is on this side of the Pond? [snip, snip, snip goes the list of historical minutiae] Madness Divine (talk) 10:18, 15 November 2022 (EST)
