History

Military Buildup

In the late 2640s, Selanta Amaris was struck by a rare form of cancer and she spent much of the rest of her reign ruling from her sickbed. She relied upon her cousin Tadeo, who was the Minister of Military Affairs, to act as her regent starting in 2649. An ambitious man, Tadeo went to work strengthening the Rim Worlds Army at an alarming rate, supplied in secret by the Draconis Combine. By 2650, The Star League estimated that he had doubled the military in a mere three months, prompting First Lord Michael Cameron to issue the Council Edict of 2650 placing restrictions on the size of every state's military.[1][2][3]

By early 2651, Tadeo had garrisoned front-line, elite troops in a state of combat readiness along the entire border with the Lyran Commonwealth. He set about turning Apollo, Götterdämmerung, Erewhon, and several other worlds into armed camps. After Archon Sarah Steiner-Dinesen protested and the Star League sent five BattleMech regiments on extensive, well-publicized maneuvers complete with infantry, aerospace, and artillery support, Tadeo scaled back his forces.[1][2][4]

With an estimated seven regiments worth of additional BattleMechs available in the wake of Tadeo Amaris' military buildup,[2] the Rim Worlds Army saw the creation of at least two notable units: the Twenty-third Republic Light Lancers, which later joined the the Lyran Commonwealth after the Amaris Civil War and became one of their most successful regiments of all time;[5] and the Third Amaris Legionnaires, a demonstration regiment reestablished by Selanta Amaris to increase the interstellar reputation of the Republic's MechWarriors.[6]

Two large orbital dry dock complexes had been built in the twenty-seventh century as a result of Tadeo's weapons program, located on Erin and Star's End.[7]

If Tadeo had entertained any notions of becoming the next president, his capitulation to the Star League's show of superior force had tarnished his political position, and never again would he have the popular support to become a potential rival to Selanta.[1] When Selanta died in 2687 and her son Bertram was assassinated before he could be sworn in as president, cousin Carl Siever was the only adult member of House Amaris or House Siever directly in line for the presidency,[8] suggesting Tadeo had already died or had lost all remaining political power to be considered.

Legacy

By 2766, the Rim Worlds Republic's so-called Secret Army had grown to be a force of fifty divisions, or roughly 450 regiments. While most of this was created through clandestine funding from financial institutions across the Inner Sphere, as much as fifteen percent had already been accumulated over the century, including the significant equipment stockpiles and WarShips that Tadeo had constructed during his time as regent.[9]

By the mid-twenty-eighth century, one of the Rim Worlds Army's flagship Imperial Divisions had been named after Tadeo.[10]
