Planetary History
Star League
During the final years of the Star League, Sternwerde was the host to a Star League Defense Force garrison.[4]
Succession Wars
Post Fourth Succession War
In 3035, Hansen's Roughriders, a mercenary unit in the employ of the Federated Commonwealth, jumped through the Free Rasalhague Republic to attack Sternwerde. Sternwerde at the time was defended by the Fifth Benjamin Regulars and a battalion of the Elite Second Sword of Light. The defending Combine forces fought a delaying action while awaiting reinforcements to trap and destroy the Roughriders. The Roughriders were able to keep the defenders a bay until enemy reinforcements arrived. However, instead of retreating from the numerically superior forces, the Roughriders attacked the enemy landing zone and destroyed the Combine reinforcements in their Dropships while they were unloading. With this victory, the Roughriders then left Sternwerde.[5]
Clan Invasion
Operation Revival
Sternwerde was conquered by Clan Ghost Bear in January 3052 during the fifth wave of Operation REVIVAL. The 1st Bear Guards began their attack by dropping through heavy cloud cover to directly engage the defending 7th Alshain Regulars at Lone Hill and Marlet. This began a running fight between the two as the Bear Guards maneuvered along the first line of defense and punched through its center, allowing them to spread out and to take down as many opponents from behind as possible. The Seventh's commander officer, Tai-sa Gerber Shazil, upset this plan by ordering his units to instead charge through the Bear Guards' own lines and march out into the waters of Dearborne Lake. While the pursuing Clan warriors chased them out of the lake, they briefly lost contact with with the Seventh during a blinding rainstorm. They finally caught up with them at dawn the next day and engaged the regiment near their parked DropShips at Hideaway, but before they could be destroyed elements of the Seventh sacrificed themselves so that the bulk of their unit could escape off-world.[6]
Dark Age
The Second Combine-Dominion War
On November 2nd, 3099, the Fifth Sword of Light attacked Sternwerde via a nearby pirate point merely a days travel away. The defending Rasalhague Dominion force, the 300th Battle Cluster, initially thought the incoming Jumpships were a delayed supply shipment. However, when the incoming ships did not answer any hails, the 300th realized they were under assault, but had little time to prepare a defense. The Fifth Sword of Light landed unopposed and moved quickly to attack the Dominion forces.
The 300th centered their defense on Camp Mützenich, a formerly Draconis Combine built fortification that had been repurposed by Sternwerde's new rulers. For a week, the 300th held off the Fifth by using the walls of Camp Mützenich to restrict what firepower the Combine units could bring to bear. On November 10th, the Fifth focused their artillery on a section of the Camp's wall and created a hole in the fortifications. They then pushed a small number of units through before the 300th could close the gap. One of these units was a covert ISF team that used explosives to detonate the Camp's munitions depot and power plant. However, by November 14th the Combine forces withdrew as they began taking unacceptable losses. But, before leaving, the Fifth's Dropships passed over Camp Mützenich to destroy whatever targets they could. The DCMS considered the attack on Sternwerde a victory as it left the 300th combat ineffective for the near future.[7]
