The '''''Sovetskii Soyuz''''' was one of several new designs to emerge following [[General]] [[Rebecca Fredasa|Rebecca Fredasa's]] [[New Arms Order]] of [[2735]] and was notable for its large use of computer control as well as its heavy armament.

==Overview==
The ''Sovetskii Soyuz'' was originally classed as a heavy cruiser developed as part of an overhaul of the [[SLDF|Star League Defense Force's]] naval fleet following years of neglect due to large amounts of money being spent on the automated [[SDS|Space Defense Systems]]. [[Jocasta Cameron|Mother Jocasta Cameron]] reversed her predecessor's focus on the SDS, as while construction had been going on, the [[Star League]] fleet had fallen behind in technology and capability when compared to newer [[WarShips]] emerging from member state shipyards.<ref name=TRO3057R150-151/><ref name=TR27509138/> 

Four hundred ships of this class would be built before the [[Amaris Civil War]] brought about the downfall of the Star League. The vast majority were destroyed in the attempt to depose Amaris, but around 40 surviving vessels left with [[Aleksandr Kerensky|General Kerensky]]'s [[Operation Exodus|Exodus fleet]] and a number continue to serve in the [[Clan]] ''[[touman]]s''.<ref name=TRO3057R150-151/> It was publicly acknowledged in the second half of the thirty-first century that [[ComStar]] maintained two ''Sovetskii Soyuzes'' in service as a part of their WarShip fleet,<ref name="TDRp26+">''The Dragon Roars'', pp. 26–27: "Attack Flotilla"</ref><ref name="FM:Up83">''Field Manual: Updates'', p. 83: "ComStar Naval Assets"</ref> and during the course of the [[Jihad]] it became apparent that the [[Word of Blake]] had recovered two ''Sovetskii Soyuzes'' of their own and restored them to service.<ref name="J:FRp128">''Jihad: Final Reckoning'', p. 128: "Word of Blake Naval Assets"</ref>

==Capabilities==
For its time, the class employed an unprecedented amount of computer control of systems, including [[Nirasaki Computers Collective|Nirasaki's]] [[Hornblower computer system]]. The automated ammunition feeding and monitoring system reduced the personnel requirement by about 80. This system does have issues, though, requiring frequent manual overrides, and leaving ships vulnerable when they suffer from so-called "brain seizures".<ref name=TR27509138>''Technical Readout: 2750'', pp.138-140, "Sovetskii Soyuz"</ref> 

The vessel carried such a large armament that some SLDF officers considered the ''Sovetskii Soyuz'' a mini-Battlecruiser. Its formidable long-distance weapons array consists of 12 [[Imperator-20]] NAC/20 Naval Autocannons, six [[Sorenstein-45a]] Series naval lasers, eight [[Ceres-N]] Medium Naval Particle Projection Cannons, two [[White Shark]] and four [[Barracuda]] Missile Launcher batteries. The size and number of these weapons, however, required a sacrifice in [[Bowman JK3]] armor, with the ship mounting almost 50% less armor than the smaller ''[[Black Lion]]'' battlecruiser.<ref name=TRO3057R150-151/>

Star League officers worried that the class would crumple under fire as a "One-Shot Wonder" but proved adept at masking the weaknesses while playing to the ''Sovetskii Soyuz's'' strengths.<ref name=TR27509138/> Despite the light armor the ''Sovetskii Soyuz'' class was able to perform well in the war to liberate [[Terra]], using its long-range firepower to keep adversaries at a distance.<ref name=TRO3057R150-151/>
