Never Trust the Recruitment Posters is a short story by James Kirtley that was published in the twelfth issue of Shrapnel. It was continued in Six Months on the Float.
Plot summary[edit]
On 1 June 3025, a young MechWarrior named Leonidas Simonides arrives on Galatea with hopes of becoming a professional mercenary, actively seeking job opportunities but facing limited success. Reality proved to be harsher than he anticipated, as his small 'Mech and lack of discipline hindered his chances of being recruited. Despite meeting someone named Carlyle, Leonidas felt dismissed due to his youth and struggled to articulate why he aspired to be a MechWarrior.
In his desperation, Leonidas eventually signed up with the only unit interested in him, led by a man named Lucius, who aimed to establish a mercenary cooperative. Joining the newly formed unit, Leonidas embarked on their first mission, likely a pirate-hunting endeavor. The story finishes with Simonides beginning to feel a sense of belonging and realizing he had found what he had been searching for.
