Description

The third design of the Draconis Combine's resurgent post–Succession Wars WarShip fleet, the Inazuma-class (Japanese for "lightning") Corvette is designed to strike as hard and as fast as possible, rapidly approaching unsuspecting DropShips and fellow WarShips and overwhelming them with massed firepower.[2]

Due to the sheer size of its high-thrust engines, Lithium-Fusion Battery and the WarShip's designers packing as much weaponry as possible into the Inazuma's small frame, little space was left for protective armor or crew quarters. While it boasts a single small Grav Deck, only the ship's captain and XO have full-size quarters, and all other crew members are forced to "hot-rack" (on-duty and off-duty personnel sharing bunks). Though the Inazuma can operate without support for months at a time, the Draconis Combine Admiralty has revived an old practice of providing each vessel with two crews that operate in rotating six-month on, six-month off rosters.[2]

The Draconis Combine built only four Inazuma-class vessels, a fifth was under construction when unknown saboteurs destroyed the section of the Dieron shipyards where it was being built in 3065. Plans for future vessels were scrapped, with the line rebuilt in 3066 solely to support the existing ships.[2] Two vessels were lost in the Jihad, while the other two survived to the 32nd century and the Second Combine-Dominion War with one lost in that conflict and the other severely damaged.[5]

Armament

Focused on a first strike role, the Inazuma mounts two Medium NPPCs in its nose, supported by ten ER Large Lasers and four standard PPCs. Each forward and rear angle carries a single NAC/20 and eight extended-range large lasers, while directly aft features another NAC/20 and four PPCs. The broadsides both feature six PPCs, a single Medium NPPC, and NAC/20. Given the mission parameters of the design, a hundred and forty NAC/20 rounds, fifty rounds for each Naval Autocannon, offering reasonable endurance.

To try and protect the lightly armored vessel against missile attacks, the Inazuma mounted six anti-missile systems, one on each angle (save the broadsides), with eighteen total tons of ammunition to feed them.

Cargo

Another victim of the design's large engines and heavy weapons loadout, the Inazuma carrying capacity is limited, featuring a trio of Docking collars, six aerospace fighters and two Small Craft, all of which limit the craft to a meager cargo capacity of one thousand, eight hundred and eighty-nine tons.[2]

Notes

The class's weight is given as 198,000 tons in Technical Readout: 3067, while that figure has been superseded in the MUL. TRO:3067 likewise gives only the listed officers and enlisted/not-rated crew list as given above, with no bay personnel or gunners.
