Clifford VanMeter aka Gideon was the co-writer and artist of the first comic created for BattleTech.
He was the art director of StarDate Magazine Volume 3, Numbers 3-6.

An ominous note on page 2 of StarDrive Volume 1, Number 1—the rebranded issue following StarDate Volume 3, Number 6, that also attempted to sever ties with FASA—states Clifford VanMeter was "released from his employment [with Reluctant Publishing] as of 11 December, 1987." When asked about it and the circumstances further alluded to in the editorial, he replied to Johannes Heidler in a private mail on 27 November 2007: "Not sure about the StarDrive thing you referenced. I left Reluctant Publishing because they couldn't pay me, simple as that."
