Deep Periphery refers to the areas of space beyond the (known) coherent human sphere of influence comprising the Inner Sphere and the adjacent Periphery realms. No HPG communication network exists in the Deep Periphery, and therefore there exists no communication with other realms or the Inner Sphere except by courier ships. This is also true for the greater part of the near periphery. Due to the vague nature of the term, there is no clearly defined beginning of the Deep Periphery, nor any directions or boundaries. It is generally used to refer to the depths of unknown space.

Though the Deep Periphery is largely uncharted, the Deep Periphery is far from uninhabited. Numerous factions are known to reside in the Deep Periphery, which is littered with abandoned or failed colonies, small outposts, and interstellar empires. Many factions from the periphery and even the Inner Sphere maintain hidden bases in the Deep Periphery. The Clans established numerous garrisons, depots and cargo waystations between their space in the coreward periphery and the Inner Sphere.
