The Danais is a small spheroid DropShip design which was originally conceived as an unarmed light cargo ship during the Star League era (specifically, the "late 2720s", though the Master Unit List has established its inception date as 2728), and was still considered ubiquitous two and a half centuries later.[2]
It was notably one of the few ship classes that the Star League allowed to be produced in Periphery states (implicitly because of its small size, unassuming technology, straightforward design, and lack of any armament whatsoever).[2]

Description
In the late 2720s, a light civilian transporter design was created that was based loosely on the highly successful Union-class 'Mech carrier DropShip. This derivate design was the Danais. Built to civilian, as opposed to military, specifications and with lower total mass, it was nevertheless visually similar enough to its military cousin that they could be mistaken for one another.[2] (Although both vessels have been ubiquitous in their respective roles for centuries, the Union appears to be the vastly better known class; it stands to reason that the many reports of Unions refitted for cargo duty may in fact refer in no small part to Danais class vessels that were misidentified as Unions.)
In the Taurian Concordat, many unarmed Danais vessels were converted into blockade runners before long, armed with weaponry for smuggling and self-defense that was usually concealed behind blowout panels. Such militarized Danais vessels became known as Trojans, usually treated as a distinct DropShip class.[2]
Armament
The Danais class is virtually unarmed. The ship is protected by 23 tons of standard armor.[2][3]
Cargo & Capacities
The Danais has ten passenger cabins and a 1,700 ton cargo bay with two doors. It also features two Small Craft bays.[2][3]
Variants
- The Trojan class is arguably just a refit variant of the Danais.
