The Chainelane Isles are a small deep periphery realm consisting of several worlds, residing in a space 100 light years in diameter and 100 light years core-ward of the Greater Valkyrate. The Isles are home to several small duchies or principalities, each possessing a few worlds. Like the successor states, these neighboring principalities are vying for supremacy and have been fighting constant, Succession War-style combat for years.
Though BattleMech technology is present within the Isles, not one of the Chainelane Isle denizen states are able to manufacture their own army. BattleMechs are reserved for protection of significant objectives and decisive actions. Therefore, wars within the Isles are fought almost exclusively by infantry and combat vehicles. The collateral damage caused by this warfare is minimal at most, and few borders change within the Isles.
During the Clan Invasion of the Inner Sphere, the Chainelain Isles stood in the path of the Clan juggernaut. However, only the Duchy of Vendôme disappeared within the Isles. Comstar speculates the Clans may have tested their mettle on an "Inner Sphere" opponent before reaching the Periphery.
