Description
Developed as merchantman to ply potentially hostile Periphery shipping lanes, the Carrack-class military transport was developed from the SLDF Carrack-class transport, and serves in the fleets of nearly every Clan. However, unlike the Star League-era vessel, the Clan Carrack lacks improved heavier, more advanced armor and a Lithium-Fusion Battery.
While no examples of the class were known to remain in the Inner Sphere, an undetermined number accompanied the Exodus Fleet, with the modern Clan Carrack military transport first entering service 2950. ComStar analysts have been unable to determine how many of the Carracks currently in service among the various Clan toumans are upgraded Star League era vessels, and how many are new Clan-built ships.
Armament
Due to its role as a military transport, the Carrack features a light array of mixed capital class and anti-fighter weaponry. The nose bay and each broadside features a pair of NL35s and a single NAC/20, two ER Large Lasers and four Large Pulse Lasers, rounded off by four Anti-Missile Systems for point defense. Save for downgrading the Naval Autocannon to a NAC/10, each fore and rear angle as well as directly aft features almost the same layout as well.
Cargo
The Carrack's 63,446 ton cargo hold surrounds the vessel’s Compact Kearny-Fuchida Drive core and is flanked, in turn, by two Small Craft bays. Most frequently, these bays house a pair of aerospace fighters and a pair of shuttlecraft, but the exact composition of the small craft complement appears to depend on each individual vessel’s captain.
Variants
- Clan Merchant Caste Variant - Both Clan Nova Cat and Clan Diamond Shark faced the same dilemma when assigning Carrack-class vessels to their ever more affluent merchant castes: whether or not to give their merchants war materiel on par with that of the warrior caste. Working together, the two Clans decided to circumvent the issue by stripping many Carrack-class vessels of capital weapons and heavy armor, while at the same time maximizing cargo capacity. Like the basic Clan models, these merchant-caste variants also lacks Lithium-Fusion Batteries and advanced armor composites, but they do feature the Clans' HarJel based Hull Sealant technology. BV (1.0) = 10,674[1]
- Star League Variant - The basic Carrack used by the Star League Defense Forces mounted improved armor (though which type is unclear) and a Lithium-Fusion Battery. No other details are available, and every one of these vessels departed the Inner Sphere with Aleksandr Kerensky.
