Planet History
In the remote regions of Annapolis, the primitive indigenous people practice a DropShip cult (a faith based on a technological artifact, including a mythology of visitors from the sky). Apparently, Annapolis was one of the stopping points of the Exodus fleet led by Aleksandr Kerensky as he departed the Inner Sphere. Eight hundred kilometers from the home of the cult stands a six meter tall granite statue of Kerensky, a perfect likeness. There is no naturally occurring granite on Annapolis. The statue confirms that the DropShip cult actually idolizes the departing SLDF.[1]
Annapolis was originally settled by individuals from Terra's North American continent. Though initially successful, the world's Terran crops were smashed down by native microbes. This led to food shortages and drug-resistant plagues that affected the population. After the Terran Alliance evacuated their administrators and declared the Demarcation Declaration in 2242, Annapolis was left to its own devices. Surviving by the skin of their teeth, the residents were able to keep a late 19th century level of technology across most of the world, with late 20th or early 21st century technology being confined to Maryland, the capital city. The Alliance of Galedon extended an invitation to join, which Annapolis eagerly accepted. Though they hoped for an immediate renaissance of their world, the Annapolians discovered that the Combine basically saw them as a glorified mining settlement.[1]
During the Succession Wars, raids by enemy forces destroyed the few native industries left on the world. This led to the planet's current condition. Though it possesses many features of other Garden Worlds, it cannot capitalize on them. As a result instead of the prosperous world it could be, Annapolis is more like a Skid Row world or prosperous Periphery planet. Most of the citizens survive by subsistence farming, and life for most is brutal and dirty.[1]
Medical care is currently at a mid-20th century level, with most health care overseen by village folk practitioners. These folk doctors are backed up by a series of clinics and hospitals that feature more advanced technology and better-educated medical personnel. Though the nobles live for nearly 100 years, the average lifespan on Annapolis is 53 years, the lowest in the Inner Sphere.[1]
Crime is nearly nonexistent on Annapolis. The Combine's tradition of strong community orientation along with the noble's habits of using criminals as the game in a "big game hunt" and severe penalties for violent crimes, keep crime to a minimum.[1]
