Authorized by the Alliance Space Command (ASC), the AS Altair was the first launched by the Western Alliance to Mars.

History

The Altair was the first of the Altair class transports using conventional chemical propulsion. It was part of the ASC missions to Mars.

Launching in July, 2017 with a crew of six, the Altair was equipped with scientific instrumentation and supplies for the year long round trip.

There are known to be at least four Altair class transports including the second mission to Mars by the AS Procyon and the fusion drive refit nine years later of the AS Columbia.

The success of the Altair led to the first fusion propelled spacecraft the AS Columbia.
