All Good Things is a short story by James Lee that was published in the fourth issue of Shrapnel on 15 March 2021.
Plot summary
The 2 November 3057, the Twenty-First Centauri Lancers commander, Colonel Evelena Haskell, had a meeting with ColonelMarcus Baxter, the overall commander of their joint operation to take the planet New Canton, as part of the Operation GUERRERO. They had just landed, but in the way down, the Lancers have suffered heavy damage of the FedCon defenders aerospace forces. She blamed Baxter, for having sent their aerospace far away and barely sent any help, but he dismissed her concerns. After Baxter had leaved, Evelena talked with his second in command, Ryan Searcy, which was convinced than Marcus was blooding them deliberately, to punish them for the unit's defection from Capellan's army, decades before. She agreed with her, but wanted to respect their contract. The same day, Evelena led an assault alongst with McCarron's Cavalry units against the planet's defenders. The Lancers were suffering a pounding from the FedCon artillery, and the McCarron's weren't barely advancing. Finally, she was forced to break off the attack, to save her people. Once again on the base, Baxter blamed Evelena for the failed attack, and refused her accusations to being using the Lancers as cannon fodder. After he departed, Haskell ordered a meeting of all the Lancer's officers. The next day, the Lancers and McCarron's Cavalry made another attack on the planet's capital. The Lancers were suffering a pounding again, and the McCarron's again were barely advancing. After Baxter refused to advance faster, Evelena, tired, retreated of the fight, after communicating their neutrality to the FedCon's leader. After terminating the contract, the Lancers traveled to Outreach, where they received a new contract, from ComStar, to garrison Terra, which they gladly accepted.
