History[edit]

The FSS Kali was a member of the Soyal-class of Heavy Cruisers. It is unclear when, how or why a heavy cruiser that was only ever fielded by the Capellan Confederation and Free Worlds League would have a Federated Suns ("FSS") registration.

Canonicity[edit]

The Kali is at the center of the Arms of the Destroyer short story, and not mentioned anywhere else in canon. While this story technically meets all criteria for canon, it hinges on anachronisms (namely, the casual appearance of active WarShips roughly a century after the last known WarShip was lost) that cannot be reconciled with established canon otherwise because of anachronisms. This problem was acknowledged by the Line Developer, and the story which is the only source of information about the Kali is thus considered apocryphal at this time.

History[edit]

The Kali was described as a command and control ship which disappeared in 2838 due to a misjump, eventually crashlanding on a planet named Cinnabar. The crew died in the impact or from the planet's extremely toxic atmosphere, any survivors would die of starvation.[1]

A recovery team from the Lyran Commonwealth found her in 2940[2] and began salvage operations on the crashed and overgrown hulk. The Kali was considered a treasure, with a full battalion of BattleMechs, a working HPG, nuclear weapons, and more importantly, databanks full of design specs for various combat units including BattleMechs.[3] At the time this LosTech data was precious.

A Draconis Combine task force including another WarShip attacked the Lyran salvage operation. The outnumbered Lyran defenders could not stop them, and ultimately decided to destroy their find to prevent it from falling into Combine hands.[4]
