During the Federated Suns's invasion of Tikonov during Operation RAT of the Fourth Succession War, Smirnov was stationed near the mining town of Gizhiga located high in the Kazan mountain range. The Second Crucis Lancers overran Smirnov's outpost on their way to city, where they engaged the remaining forces of the Ariana Grenadiers, roughly a company in size after suffering heavy losses from aerospace wing bombardments.[1]
