Planetary History
Early History
Shimonita possesses a single large continent surrounded by islands. The surrounding ocean is constantly whipped into a frenzy by massive storm activity that perpetually forms in Shimonita's atmosphere. These storms occasionally flood the coastal areas of Shanghai (the continent), so colonists built their cities inland, away from the coastlines. Shimonita's ecology provides enough fresh water and arable land to support the local population, but not enough to generate any exports. The same is true of the mineral resources on the world. Geologists from the Ozawa Mercantile Association found large deposits of metal ores off the coast of Shanghai and the Ozawa Mercantile Association quickly negotiated rights to establish offshore and underwater mining operations on Shimonita.[2]
When House Kurita established control over the Draconis Combine, the Ozawa Mercantile Association's facilities became property of the Dragon. Within a century, poor maintenance routines and violent weather rendered the offshore and underwater plants useless. Occasionally investors would buy the plants and get them running, but these operations never lasted for more than a few decades.[2]
Post-Jihad
By the end of the Jihad Shimonita had been neglected by the Combine for centuries, despite the abundant mineral resources in place on the world;[1] despite this, the damage inflicted on the DCMS during the Jihad left Sapphire Metals with the prospect of increased production orders to help the Combine military rebuild. This was despite the fact that the Sapphire Metals plant, located in the city of Corundum, produced just a single 'Mech design - the somewhat notorious Charger[38] - and by 3079 was only operating at slightly less than three-quarters of full production capacity given the forty percent losses taken during the Jihad.[39]
Engineers from Clan Sea Fox expressed an interest in Shimonita after it was gifted to the Republic of the Sphere. They have built three new offshore mining operations, which have been nicknamed "Sea Fox Dens" by the inhabitants.[2]
