O'Leary was a member of MacLeod's Regiment, who served with Major Loren Jaffray, and participated in the defense of Northwind following the Northwind Highlanders declaring independence from the Federated Commonwealth. Joining Major Jaffray as part of the anti-Davion faction of the Highlanders, McNess fought against the pro-Davion Highlander faction and their allies from the Third Royal Guards on 5th October 3057 as the pro-Davion forces rushed for the refugee offered by a former Star League Defense Force fortress near the Tilman River, in a battle which was ultimately inconclusive.[1]
