Sarna.net Design Refresh
Excuse me Nic, never done this before, but how do I get Rebecca "Spreadsheet" Taylor added to the Canon character's page? She's my late fiance and in Rec guide 12 Livewire2112 (talk) 21:14, 12 May 2021 (EDT)

I'm currently working on a design refresh for Sarna.net, which has looked mostly the same since the wiki opened in 2006. The goal of the refresh is give a modern visual update to Sarna and to bring consistency across the News, Wiki, Forums and Downloads section.

: Hello, Livewire. I am reasonably sure that if the character is canon (I don't have #12 yet), they will be added in some fashion. However, if you want to prime the pump a bit, and are not familiar with wikis, I'd recommend opening a similar character (maybe from an earlier Guide) and starting an article named Rebecca Taylor, copying all the stuff (text & code) over into the new article, changing everything that doesn't pertain and adding what is needed. Some other Editor will be sure to follow behind and correct any mistakes or add needed info. Good luck, and I'll be looking for the article (and the Guide).--Revanche (talk|contribs) 21:21, 12 May 2021 (EDT)

Hi Nik,

I'm interested in getting your feedback on the update so far. You can enable the new look by choosing the SarnaTest skin in your preferences. Please leave any comments as you see fit. Nicjansma (talk) 11:11, 5 August 2013 (PDT)

While reviwing images without category, I found out this one File:Götterdämmerung (system) 3151.svg, which had no category nor information unlike the rest. I remember you have the "macro" that creates them and prepares them and adds a category because I asked this to help clean the "Uncategorized Files" page. No idea why this one got nuts. I added the information. Maybe it is because of the nice german spelling, but it is not the only planet like this. Hope you can review and thanks in advance!--Pserratv (talk) 08:23, 5 November 2021 (EDT)

Sarna.net Design Refresh Comments
: Perfect thanks! I had to hand-upload that file, because the umlaut caused issues with the initial batch. I think the rest were OK. Appreciate you added the category! Nicjansma (talk) 21:07, 8 November 2021 (EST)

*I care for content more than for fancy presentation. The change is a slight improvement in my book, nothing substantial in my eyes but there's certainly nothing wrong with it.
Given that Sarna is mostly perceived as the BT wiki these days, it's a bit odd that wiki isn't the first item in the navigation bar - and the "Sarna.net >>" link goes straigth to the wiki and not to some top level directory. My suggested order of items would therefore be wiki, news, forum, downloads and it goes without saying that the downloads section needs a massive cleanup. You might want to ask Catalyst if they'd allow you to host certain files that used to be free downloads from previous iterations of the official BT page: the House Books, Lawyers, Guns, & Money, also important fan work such as Objective Raids: 3067, etc.
Finally, I note that the ad sections are back even for registered user accounts. They are a bit annoying once you get used to working on a screen without ad bars... Frabby (talk) 14:51, 5 August 2013 (PDT)

::Thanks for your feedback Frabby. There will be a new landing page for the "Sarna.net >> link". While Sarna is currently known for the wiki, the News section is new and I want to promote it. I will be updating the downloads section a bit after the design refresh. And not to worry, the ads will be hidden when the updated look goes live if you're using the NoAds skin. Hi Nik, I've seen that the file with only have this category: :Category:Missing copyright information do not appear as Uncategorized... unfortunately, there are a lot of files with miss this but also other information and it is quite complex to find which ones only have the missing copyright... as those ones are missing some category else... Is there any way for you to help identify them?--Pserratv (talk) 08:21, 14 January 2022 (EST)

* I've tired using the new layout here and at work, and it looks a bit odd at times. In some pages it's fine, but when I look at the front page and article pages, about a quarter of the screen on the right is white space. That may be a setting that I've missed somewhere in my preferences.
: Hey Pserratv! Sorry I'm not fully following. You're looking for files that are *only* missing Copyright, but don't have any other categories assigned? Nicjansma (talk) 14:59, 17 January 2022 (EST)
+
* When I use the history section of an article to review changes that've been made, I'm getting the same problem, except that the text isn't formatting correctly - it's being truncated on the right hnd side. BrokenMnemonic (talk) 09:08, 6 August 2013 (PDT)
::Yes Nick, that it is. I want to see which images are missing a real category as missing copyright is a "commonplace" not a category for me. It is good to know they are missing copyright, but for me it is even more to know which ones are missing a place like being an image of a Free Worlds League character...--Pserratv (talk) 05:07, 19 January 2022 (EST)

Bug with Module:LuaTest
*Personally I don't like the new layout much; plus, in Firefox (which is all that I use) the font is messed up and looks constantly bolded and is much too large. Therefore, if you do change it for everyone, I suggest that you leave an old version for us editors to use if we want. That is my two cents. -BobTheZombie (talk) 10:55, 6 August 2013 (PDT)
Hi Nic,
+
::Can you say what you don't like about it specifically? What OS / browser are you using? The font is looks fine on the latest Firefox, IE and Chrome on Windows 7? A screenshot showing the problem would be wonderful. Nicjansma (talk) 16:19, 6 August 2013 (PDT)
Module:LuaTest shows up as a blue link in Special:LonelyPages, but the page appears to be deleted. Adding it to User:Talvin/Project_Orphanage#Technical_Pages shows it as a red link, and it does not disappear from the Orphans when that cache refreshes overnight. This is hardly a showstopper bug or even close, but it's odd. Talvin (talk) 10:57, 27 February 2022 (EST)

: Strange, I couldn't find any way to make it disappear either. Must be a side-effect of it being a LUA module. Since it's not affecting anything else (that I can tell) I'll leave it for now, but if there's a pattern of this happening I can dig into it moreThanks for bringing to my attention! :Category:Spanish language products is a double redirect, and it looks like it is locked up in the change propagation process since 26 March 2022. It appears to need deletion.--Talvin (talk) 10:15, 14 June 2022 (EDT)

: Thanks. I had to set
$smwgChangePropagationProtection = false;
first, then remove the page.
$smwgChangePropagationProtection
is now back to
true
. Nicjansma (talk) 22:32, 22 June 2022 (EDT)
