Gardner was the son and heir of Alexander Carlyle, succeeding him leading Odessa. He became father of Ronan and Isobel Carlyle. Both joined the LCAF in the Dark Age. After their unit defected and resurrected the Tamar Pact, both of his children remained loyal to the Commonwealth but were still cashiered out of the LCAF. Stranded on Garrison, they contacted their father asking for help. Gardner answered them via JumpShip message, on 29 October 3151, showing them support, and congratulating them for making the right choice. He also sent them lines of credit and local assets they could sell. Ironically, by then they didn't need them to return home, but their father's assistance helped them to solidify their newly resurrected mercenary unit, the Gray Death Legion.
