He was informed that his point of ProtoMechs were annihilated in the battle, and he had been recovered unconscious from the battlefield. His injuries and nerve damage were crippling, but Ean was still able to pilot a ProtoMech again for a short time. Enemy forces were massing for a new attack against Pahn and the Smoke Jaguars were desperate for warriors to mount a defense. Ean was the only ProtoMech pilot left in the Clan. He willingly accepted the surgery for the chance to pilot his ProtoMech one more time, even if it would likely result in (more) brain damage and further degrade his personality. The same day, when the Jaguars assaulted the factory for ammunition, Ean fought his last battle. The transformation into a ProtoMech pilot affected his sanity, and he believed himself to be Garuda battling his mortal enemy, the Naga. "Reborn" as Garuda, he went to face the Naga (The Legacy ''Grasshopper'') again. The fighting broke through the factory complex, until Ean was trapped in open ground by the 'Mech.
