=== Formation ===
The Third Dieron Regulars can claim a heritage that goes back to the [[Alliance of Galedon]] and an equally ancient proto-state: the [[Dieron Federation]]. One of many [[twenty-fourth century]] proto-states in the region of space that in later centuries became known as the [[Draconis Combine]], the Dieron Federation was persuaded to become a part of the Alliance of Galedon in [[2310]] by [[Shiro Kurita]]. As a part of the Alliance, the worlds of the Dieron Federation were required to provide a tithe of people from their population to [[New Samarkand]] for military training and indoctrination, with the first draft consisting of some three thousand men and women.<ref name=FR2765:DCMp11>''Field Report 2765: DCMS'', p. 11</ref>

The Alliance's control over the Dieron Federation fluctuated in the early years, as many became aware that they had been duped by Shiro Kurita, and Shiro was required to  put down rebellions on a number of worlds, something that he was quite willing to do, invading those systems that attempted to secede and executing their planetary leaders. Dieron broke free in [[2316]] when the newly-appointed [[Director-General]] of the [[Terran Hegemony]] began expanding [[Terra]]n influence once more; enticed by the combination of gentle diplomacy and implicit military threat, Dieron joined the Hegemony, a foe that Shiro was unable to oppose through military strength at the time. Undaunted, Shiro laid the groundwork for reclaiming Dieron by keeping the services of the [[brigade]] of Dieron natives who remained steadfastly loyal to [[House Kurita]] in his armed forces and retaining the name of the Dieron Regulars as part of the implicit promise that Dieron would once again be a part of the Kuritan state.<ref name=FR2765:DCMp11/>

Active during the [[Star League era]], five regiments of Dieron Regulars - including the Third - occupied a privileged place within the [[Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery]]. Portrayed in the Combine media as "exiles waiting for the change to go home", the Dieron Regulars spent their time divided between postings in the [[Benjamin Military District]], moving back and forth between worlds in the interior of the District and worlds on the border with the Hegemony. Recruitment into the Dieron Regulars was weighted, with first priority given to [[Sun Zhang MechWarrior Academy]] or [[Dieron Warriors' Academy]] graduates descended from members of the original Dieron draft, second priority to other personnel who could claim a lineage back to that same draft, third priority to those recruited from worlds close to Dieron and finally those recruited from other worlds within the Benjamin Military District. As of 2765 all of the [['Mech]] regimental commanders within the Dieron Regulars were both Sun Zhang graduates and descendants of the Dieron draft. As with the other Dieron Regiments, the Third Dieron Regulars was the centerpiece of a brigade consisting of a 'Mech regiment, three medium armor regiments, three infantry regiments and up to four independent artillery regiments.<ref name=FR2765:DCMp11/>

The Third Dieron Regulars were active during the [[Reunification War]], acting as one of several [[DCMS]] BattleMech regiments assigned to an ad hoc corps in support of the [[Star League Defense Force]] task force responsible for invading the [[Outworlds Alliance]]. This invasion, named [[Operation UNION HOLD]], saw the Third Dieron Regulars tasked with occupying several Alliance worlds as garrison forces and pacifying any resistance on these worlds, replacing [[Star League Defense Force]] garrisons.<ref name="H:RWp141">''Historical: Reunification War'', p. 141, "Outworlds Alliance Front"</ref>

Responsible for providing a garrison for the world of [[Bad News]] and support for various regiments of the [[Galedon Regulars]] attacking [[Kazanka]], [[Nexus Ri]] and [[Zlatousi]], the Third Dieron Regulars garrison on Bad News would be subject to a heavy attack from the [[Second Pitcairn Legion]] in [[2583]]. The Third Dieron Regulars forces on Bad News at the time consisted of a single battalion of BattleMechs, supported by two regiments of infantry and two more of armor, whereas the Second Pitcairn Legion was a full BattleMech regiment; the Pitcairn Legion spent three weeks attacking the Third Dieron Regulars and their supporting forces, almost destroying the complete battalion. The Third Dieron Regulars were stationed in concealed bases hidden deep inside the Northern Andropo badlands on [[David]] in February [[2787]] when an [[Armed Forces of the Federated Suns]] raiding party struck at the world. Warlord [[Jinjiro Kurita]], son of the [[Coordinator]], had issued strict orders to all of the units along the border with the Federated Suns and those conducting operations within the former [[Terran Hegemony]], directing units to offer the minimum level of resistance if they encountered AFFS units, mercenaries employed by the Federated Suns or their potential allies; this was to conceal the buildup of DCMS forces along the border, in readiness for an invasion of the Federated Suns.<ref name="FSWp37">''First Succession War'', p. 37, "Holding Back: The Battles for David and Saffel"</ref>

In accordance with the orders the Third remained in their concealed bases for the week that the raiders were on David; the raiders - consisting of elements of the [[Fourteenth Avalon Hussars]], supported by a [[battalion]] from the [[1894th Light Horse]], a former [[SLDF]] unit that had joined the mercenary [[Blue Star Irregulars]] - engaged elements of the [[Third Arkab Legion]] at the port city of Sassari before the Legion staged a deliberate withdrawal, and then spent a week conducting air patrols over the planet before leaving, content that they had the measure of the Combine's border defenses. The presence of the Third went unnoticed, as did the conventional forces hidden in vehicle bunkers constructed to look like transient villages dotted along the Fatima River Basin.<ref name="FSWp37"/>

The Third Dieron was sent in to annihilate them.</ref> On May, 5th, [[3029]] the regiment attacked the city, and over the course of two days slaughtered the population. On the 17th, the [[Kell Hounds]] mercenary unit arrived and conducted a sneak attack against the Regulars. The Kell Hounds' 1st Battalion overran the Third's Command HQ, killing the regiment's commander. The Third went on to fight in [[Operation Contagion]], counteroffensive planned by [[Theodore Kurita]] following the successes of the Lyran Commonwealth's Operations GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG and [[Operation HOLDUR|HOLDUR]], which had seen the Commonwealth capture numerous worlds but spread the [[Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces]] thinly. CONTAGION was intended to hit behind the front line and spread through weakly defended interior worlds; a [[battalion]] from the [[Third Dieron Regulars]], bolstered by numerous support regiments, was assigned to launch an invasion of [[Alphecca]]. Opposing the invaders was a planetary militia consisting of two armored regiments, the First and Second Alphecca Guard, bolstered by a sorry collection of infantry and reservists. The Third were assigned to assist a sister regiment, the [[Twenty-second Dieron Regulars]], during the DCMS counterattack against the joint invasion of the Combine. The Twenty-second had been on [[Konstance]] when it was invaded by a joint task force consisting of the [[Fourth Crucis Lancers]] and [[Fourth Lyran Regulars]] line regiments and the mercenary unit [[Mobile Fire]], and had been resisting the occupation for months.<ref name="H:WO3039p31">''Historical: War of 3039'', p. 31, "Konstance (April-July)"</ref> With the invasion stalled in the area around Vega due to an [[ISF]] strike that decapitated the Lyran command network in the area, the arrival of the Third on Konstance on the 19th of August caused a step change in the tempo of conflict on the planet. The Third made a daring drop within ten kilometers of Lazarus Bay and swiftly established a defensive line south of the city, seizing on the battle for Konstance as an opportunity to avenge themselves against the LCAF following defeats in the [[Fourth Succession War]]. An attempted counterattack by the Fourth Lyran Regulars saw the Lyran forces driven back, confusion on the battlefield allowing the command company from the Third to rout two battalions of lighter Lyran 'Mechs. The Third then attacked the Lyrans after they retreated to Lazarus Bay, with the Twenty-second emerging from hiding to support the assault. With the exception of the Third Division of Mobile Fire the defending forces were less experienced at fighting in urban terrain than the Dieron Regulars, and the assault into the city was a brutal slugfest fought at short range that inflicted widespread damage on Lazarus Bay. Mobile Fire managed to slow the Third and inflict heavy damage on the attackers, but the mercenary commanding officer, [[Quinten Moore]], was killed in action, leaving Mobile Fire under the command of his executive officer. Realizing that the Lyran position was untenable, the commanding officer of the Lyran Regulars had his forces fall back to their [[DropShip]]s, but rather than making a suborbital transfer and relocating the Lyran Regulars and Mobile Fire near the Fourth Crucis Lancers, he instead had his DropShips rejoin their JumpShips, leaving the Lancers behind.<ref name="H:WO3039p75">''Historical: War of 3039'', p. 75, "Konstance (April-July)"</ref>

Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Crucis Lancers were well-fortified and supported - other than lacking infantry - and could have continued to fight, but both sides knew that the battle for Ishtalia would be costly, and neither General Duncan of the Crucis Lancers, ''Sho-sho'' [[Tatyana Sobiroff]] of the Twenty-second or ''[[Tai-sho (rank)|Tai-sho]]'' James Kurenai of the Third Dieron Regulars wished to see the same kind of damage inflicted on the planetary capital that had devastated Lazarus Bay. The Dieron Regulars besieged Ishtalia for six weeks rather than trying to force their way into the city, but the siege soon identified that the Dieron Regulars lacked the forces to assault the city directly, whilst the Lancers lacked the forces to break out. When General Duncan received recall orders from the AFFC High Command he made contact with the Regulars, requesting a ceasefire; a meeting arranged two days later between Duncan and Kurenai allowed the two commanders to exchange pleasantries and compliments on the respective performance of both their commands, as well as mutual agreement that the campaign could easily tip either way but would involve considerable further bloodshed, which would be wasteful for all involved. With the DCMS counterinvasion sweeping through Combine space, the long-term outcome was most likely a DCMS victory on Konstance; to prevent further bloodshed, Kurenai offered to allow the Lancers to retreat peacefully with their honor intact. Duncan accepted and the last of the Lancers withdrew from Konstance on the 12th of November, leaving the Third and Twenty-second to rebuild.<ref name="H:WO3039p31"/>

===Jihad===
The Third Dieron Regulars were on Dieron when the Word of Blake launched an invasion of the system on the 4th of February 3068.<ref name="J:FRp45"/> After destroying the Dragon's Roost via orbital bombardment<ref name="JTP:Dp5">''Jihad Turning Points: Dieron'', p. 5, "Dieron"</ref> and launching several attacks against the Third at various remove mining sites that were largely unsuccessful,<ref name="JTP:Dp10">''Jihad Turning Points: Dieron'', p. 10, "Deadly Rain"</ref> the Blakists initially concentrated on destroying the [[Eridani Light Horse]] at Fort Winston, a part of the Fortress Dieron complex built into Mount Shanyu. The Blakists used multiple tactical nuclear strikes delivered by [[DropShip]]s against Fortress Dieron to target the Horsemen,<ref name="JTP:Dp6">''Jihad Turning Points: Dieron'', p. 6, "Combatants"</ref> although incidental casualties included the city of Aldinga, a major industrial site, which was destroyed when shelling from one Blakist [[WarShip]] intended for Fortress Dieron struck a nearby faultline that carved in the entire valley that the city had been nestled in, deep in the heart of Mataeo.<ref name="DARWp237">''Dark Age Republic Worlds'', p. 237, "Dieron"</ref> Whilst the Eridani Light Horse fought until the surviving Horsemen had been captured, the Blakists subsequently turned those same DropShips on the Third, obliterating much of the regiment.<ref name="JTP:Dp6"/>

The Second Battalion of the Third Dieron Regulars fared no better than the remainder of the regiment; stationed on [[Altair]] when the Word of Blake launched an attack in June [[3068]];<ref name="TRO:3058Up126">''Technical Readout: 3058 Upgrade'', p. 126, "SR1-O Strider"</ref> the attack used a combination of biological, chemical and nuclear weapons to complete their conquest quickly. The death toll on Altair was believed to be in the hundreds of millions (over 630 million people resided in the Smart Alice Springs region alone)<ref name=BFEWMD>''BattleCorps: INN Newscast (Solaris Broadcasting Co. section), news item published [05/07/3068]: "Blakist Forces Employ WMDs on Altair, Yorii"''</ref> and the Regulars were shattered. Despite the destruction of the Dieron Regulars in the initial attack, a ''[[Strider]]'' [[OmniMech]] painted blood red from the waist down was observed launching sporadic attacks against the Blakist garrison forces on the planet. Many of these attacks were launched from the irradiated ruins left behind by the initial Blakist attack, and the residual radiation prevented most garrison forces from either performing accurate sweeps of these locations or getting accurate sensor readings to track this mysterious 'Mech. While the identity of the 'Mech and pilot were unconfirmed, almost two dozen Blakist armored infantry and MechWarriors were killed by them. It is possible that the pilot of the mysterious ''Strider'' was ''[[Chu-i]]'' [[Meagan Fontaine]], a noted ''Strider'' pilot from the Third Dieron Regulars, whose OmniMech - nicknamed "Darkblade" - matched the configuration of the ''Strider'' that harassed the Blakist forces.<ref name="TRO:3058Up126"/>

[[Hohiro Kurita II|Hohiro Kurita]], the son of the [[Coordinator]], led a task force to try and liberate Dieron on the 16th of April 3068, but was captured in mid-June and initially reported as being missing, presumed dead.<ref name="J:FRp45">''Jihad: Final Reckoning'', p. 45, "The Jihad In Review"</ref> The [[Tenth Ghost]] had managed to sneak onto Dieron in March, and managed to fortify near Deber City and secure the Iznakki Spaceport, but were eventually ordered to retreat by the Dieron High Command after a furious and intense battle with the mercenary unit [[Burr's Black Cobras]] that raged over twenty-six days and claimed the lives of many in both units, including [[Colonel]] [[Richard Burr]] and ''[[Tai-sa]]'' [[Samual Noda]] of the Tenth Ghost.<ref name="JTP:Dp6"/><ref name="JTP:Dp9">''Jihad Turning Points: Dieron'', p. 9, "Combatants"</ref>

Despite two months of hideous losses at the hands of the invading Blakists, the Third attempted to continue to fight, but almost all of the regiment's fixed positions has been destroyed or overwhelmed by March [[3069]]. The attack made by the Tenth Ghost managed to buy the Third a little time, but the bulk of the survivors surrendered after the unit headquarters was overrun by Blakist forces in the Chiloe.
