Welcome[edit]

Welcome, Orwell84, to BattleTechWiki!

We look forward to your contributions and want to help you get off to a good strong start. Hopefully you will soon join the army of BattleTech Editors! If you need help formatting the pages, visit the manual of style. For general questions go to the Help section or the FAQ. If you can't find your answer there, please ask an Admin.

Additional tips
Here's some extra tips to help you get around in the wiki:

  • For policies and guidelines, see The Five Core Policies of BattleTechWiki and the BTW Policies. Another good place to check out is our market of Projects, to see how the smaller communities within BTW do things in their particular niche areas.
  • Each and every page (articles, policies, projects, images, etc.) has its very own discussion/talk page, found on the tab line at the top of the page. This is a great place to find out what the community is discussing along that subject and what previous issues have already been solved.
  • If you want to play around with your new wiki skills, the Sandbox is for you. Don't worry: you won't break anything. A great resource for printing out is the Wiki Cheat Sheet.
  • If you're not registered, then please consider doing so. At the very least, you'll have a UserPage that you own, rather than sharing one with the community.
  • Also consider writing something about yourself on your UserPage (marked as "Orwell84" at the top of the page, though only do this if you're registered). You'll go from being a 'redshirt' to a 'blueshirt,' with the respect of a more permanent member.
    • This is really helpful for the admins, as it gives your account that touch of "humanity" that assists us in our never-ending battle with spambots.
  • For your first few edits on the wiki, please do not add any URLs (which can be an indicator of SPAM).
  • Consider introducing yourself on our Discord server.
  • In your Preferences, under the edit tab, consider checking Add pages I create to my watchlist and Add pages I edit to my watchlist, so that you can see how your efforts have affected the community. Check back on following visits by clicking on watchlist.
  • If you're bored and want to find something to do, try the Random button in the sidebar, or check out the List of Wanted Pages. Or even go to Special Pages to see what weird stuff is actually tracked by this wiki.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages using four tildes (~~~~) or by clicking on the circled button in this image; this will automatically produce your name (or IP address, if you are editing anonymously) and the date.

Again, welcome to Sarna's BattleTechWiki!

Hello[edit]

Hi Orwell84, I've seen your recent edits and I like them. They're usually big additions to the articles in question, and well-written. So, as a token of my appreciation and hopes that you will continue in this fashion, have an award. Substantial Addition Award, 1st ribbon Oh, and welcome to Sarna by the way! :) Cheers, Frabby (talk) 07:20, 14 January 2015 (PST)

Thank you kindly Frabby , much appreciated! :)

Hy[edit]

Awards Board[edit]

Hi, i installed the awards board to your user page.--Doneve (talk) 03:10, 26 January 2015 (PST)03:10, 26 January 2015 (PST)

Turning Points article[edit]

While I do agree with the article you created in principle, I propose to extend its scope to all Turning Points products, i.e. to include the Jihad Turning Points and Operational Turning Points products. The "main" article would be Turning Points, and Jihad/Historical/Operational turning points would be redirects to that article. What do you think? Frabby (talk) 02:22, 8 February 2015 (PST)

Good idea Frabby, I agree. I'll fill out a generic Turning Points article with the Historicals and add the other series over the coming week when I get time. That way anyone who's interested can find a list of all the Turning Points PDFs and what each of them deals with. Orwell84 (talk) 03:13, 9 February 2015 (PST)

Intelser[edit]

Yo Orwell84,

Intelser, interesting little nugget of fluff I have never heard of before.. Don't forget that you need to back things up with refs or it falls flat on its face!--Dmon (talk) 04:37, 14 November 2018 (EST)

Thanks for the heads up Dmon! I've gone back and fleshed out the article.--Orwell84 (talk) 02:38, 15 November 2018 (EST)

Thoughts[edit]

Morning Orwell84 (or what ever time it is where you are),

As one of a crop of new editors on the wiki I would like your thoughts on something that has knock on effects about handling future new products. How we handle new products.--Dmon (talk) 05:46, 28 November 2018 (EST)

Award[edit]

Hey Orwell,

I would like to present you an award for your recent articles on the Mosiro Archipelago and Draconis Reach. These are fine examples of the kind of work the wiki needs more of.

All Purpose Award, 1st ribbon I have alsk added the award to your awards board.--Dmon (talk) 07:15, 5 February 2019 (EST)

Thanks Dmon :)--Orwell84 (talk)

Bloodnamed Warriors[edit]

Hi Orwell,

I deleted the Trent entry in the Howell (Bloodname)‎‎, as here we only list Bloodnamed Warriors, and Trent never attained that honor.--Pserratv (talk) 02:58, 20 February 2019 (EST)

Nomination.[edit]

I just want you to know that I have nominated you for an award in the 2019 Founder's Awards for your work on the wiki last year. Dmon (talk) 09:36, 16 February 2020 (EST)

Thanks Dmon, much appreciated! Hopefully my work's been of use to other fans :)--Orwell84 (talk)
Well deserved! Nicjansma (talk) 21:12, 7 July 2020 (EDT)

Affiliation in character articles[edit]

Hey Orwell,

Good work on the Yori Kurita article, I am glad somebody is doing some work on the Dark Age Draconis Combine stuff because really do not enjoy Ilsa J. Bicks writing.

Anyway, what I want to ask you though is on characters like Yori list the affiliation as House Kurita rather than the Draconis Combine. My personal pet project involves tracing as many noble families as I can. Part of that involves seperating House and State. Normal people are listed as loyal to the state but nobles are loyal to the family first, in a similar way to modern politicians look after themselves first.--Dmon (talk) 22:06, 20 May 2020 (EDT)

No worries Dmon, I'll keep that in mind for future House-specific characters. I've only just reached Daughter of the Dragon in my MWDA collection so I've only seen Yori in Sword of Sedition and Fortress Republic so far. Hopefully I'll have Yori's article updated with both plus ER3145 and Shattered Fortress by next week, and then I'll add from Bick's novels as I reach them.Orwell84 (talk) 23:39, 21 May 2020 (EDT)

Thanks[edit]

Cheers for catching my screw-up on Spotlight On: Schmidt’s Petraries, no Idea why I made an article as a TtS product!--Dmon (talk) 05:01, 10 June 2020 (EDT)

No worries Dmon, easy error to make when you're churning out fifty new articles :)--Orwell84 (talk)

Operation TIAMAT[edit]

Good job. Your solid article creation within only one edit reveals a bit of your preparation method.--Revanche (talk|contribs) 07:08, 23 May 2021 (EDT)

Thanks Revanche. I like to try getting something like that done in one or two edits rather than leave a messy half-done page.--Orwell84 (talk)

Clearing Update Needed Banner[edit]

Iota Galaxy (Clan Jade Falcon): thank you. That was there for 6+ years, so good on you for clearing that up with the needed info. Maybe you found your calling here? Updating long-outdated articles?--Revanche (talk|contribs) 06:14, 29 May 2021 (EDT)

No worries. I'm actually doing articles at random, when I can, and focusing somewhat on updates from the Dark Age. But if there's a way to identify the longest running pages needing updates, I'll chip away at those.--Orwell84 (talk)
Just over 1500+ pages for you to choose from. This is really the best source, but it, unfortunately, won't tell you length of time wearing the Update Needed template. --Revanche (talk|contribs) 09:02, 29 May 2021 (EDT)

Marik Civil War (31st c.)[edit]

Good solid improvement of the article. --Revanche (talk|contribs) 06:33, 7 June 2021 (EDT)

Discord[edit]

Are you on the Discord server? Are you willing to register there? I'd like to have a real-time chat with you about a request I'd like to make.--Revanche (talk|contribs) 13:44, 13 June 2021 (EDT)

No worries, just signed up. What's a good time for you? I'm on Australian Eastern Standard Time so I'm about 17 hours ahead of the West Coast and 20 hours ahead of the East Coast--Orwell84 (talk)
I think that puts you in the same timezone as NZ Standard, right (...but that can't be correct)? I'm East Coast US (and retired), so hit me up whenever you can. I did DM you over there.--Revanche (talk|contribs) 13:18, 15 June 2021 (EDT)

Smoke Jag Crest[edit]

Hi Orwell, I finally noticed you reverted the Smoke Jaguar crest to an older version. I had uploaded the newest "plain" symbol from a recent canon source over the top of a fan-created image that had been there for almost 10 years. That fan-created image was then deleted (hence the confusion I'm sure). That being said, when changing images, please be sure the source is updated if necessary. This helps verify that the image is legit. In this case, no source was originally listed for the original version, so I just went with the new image with known source. I just replaced the old version with a higher quality one with known source. Faction symbols are something I hope to clean up considerably, it's just going to take time. --Cache (talk)

No worries Cache, I'll keep that in mind in future.--Orwell84

Repurposed stuff[edit]

Hey Orwell84,

Just so you know, I have removed your "Family and Legacy" edit to the Hadji Doru article. I am not entierly convinced of the relevance of the information to an article about Hadji, who for all we know may of not even ever met his great grandson BUT the article for the character the edit actually concerned did not have the info, nor did the article about the family so I have not deleted your edit, just slightly rephrased it and moved it to places I feel are more appropriate.--Dmon (talk) 15:59, 7 January 2023 (EST)

Draconis Reach[edit]

Hey Orwell84,

Just want to say that I am not keen on Draconis Reach being an affiliation, I strongly think the systems should stay as disputed, I also feel this way about the Chaos March, because there are places or regions not alligences. I very much doubt that the people who live there consider themselves "Reachers".--Dmon (talk) 16:42, 13 March 2023 (EDT)

Fair enough point, Dmon. I'll re-edit those then. I did have the impression that the affiliation category was about who owned or disputed the system rather than what allegiance the locals held, since inhabitants on some worlds actively resisted the Combine, Clan Smoke Jaguar, the Blakists, etc.--Orwell84
It kinda is but there is a lot of gray area that our charts do not really have space to really explain. So Independent, Disputed or No record are the options we are trying to use if no state holds a firm grip. Eventually, and I do mean eventually in a longish term way I am hoping to convince the Cartography teams to start doing region and state maps similar to the ones found on the system articles where you can scroll through the years. At that point we will be much better equipped to handle regions like the Draconis Reach, Chaos March and things like the Bolan Thumb.--Dmon (talk) 17:06, 13 March 2023 (EDT)

Removal of affiliation?[edit]

Hey Orewll,

Just wondering why you removed the year 3137 from the political affiliations on the Tamarind article?--Dmon (talk) 08:02, 29 December 2023 (EST)

Hey Dmon,

I checked the source given and that chapter was actually on a different planet entirely. Plus, according to the timeline in FM:3145 and ER:3145 Tamarind was under Lyran occupation for nearly two years from Dec 3136.--Orwell84 (talk) 23:02, 29 December 2023 (EST)
