Description[edit]

The Skimmer-class hovercraft is extremely fast, but only lightly armed and armored. While no longer in production, the open-topped one or two man crewed vehicle is small enough to traverse lightly wooded areas unlike most other hovercraft and was typically used by scouts for battlefield reconnaissance, search-and-rescue or for quick travel in nearly every Inner Sphere military during the late Succession Wars era.[2] [3]

S.L. Lewis would use this vehicle as the basis for his Savannah Master in 3025, increasing its tonnage while fitting a smaller Omni 25 to add some armor and a Medium laser in exchange for a 80 kph reduction in speed and the loss of some of the standard Skimmer's all-terrain capabilities.[3]

The Skimmer features a forward-firing Small Laser and a rear-firing Flamer.[2][3]

  • The Skimmer originally appeared in the original MechWarrior: The BattleTech Role Playing Game with somewhat limited detail with a record sheet was published in Record Sheets Volume Five: Vehicles, the vehicle would receive a modern revisit in Recognition Guide: ilClan, vol. 31, reducing its ground speed.[3]
  • When the Skimmer was originally introduced there were no rules yet for Design Quirks, but it is described to possess the special ability that it may enter light woods, a terrain normally forbidden for hovercraft (A successful Driving roll is required for the attempt, but it is not stated what happens when the roll fails),[4] with Recognition Guide: ilClan, vol. 31 but also explaining why the Savannah Master does not feature it.
