The Farhome system was home to at least one habitable world or construct and as of 3095 was an independent system.[2]

System Description[edit]

The Farhome system is located in Rimward Sector of the Deep Periphery, close to the border between the Rimward and Spinward sectors and beyond the outer border of the Calderon Protectorate.[3] The Farhome system has a class G9V primary, and features no significant asteroid clusters or large gas giants.[1]

System History[edit]

The Farhome system was settled the twenty-second century.[1]

Farhome is the largest planet in the Farhome system, and has a single moon. The lack of large gas giants or larger planets in the system gives Farhome a regular orbit.[1]

Planetary History[edit]

Early History[edit]

Farhome was colonized very early in the history of interstellar spaceflight. The colonists were a group who called themselves the Naturists, and were primarily from the Terran regions of North America and central Europe. The colonists were intent on founding a utopia modeled on the late medieval period, but their society instead degenerated into a neo-Paleolithic society.[2] The two distinct groupings both left an ideological mark on their ancestors; the American settlers had shared neo-progressives beliefs in obtaining purity through frugality and simplicity, along with being convinced of the manifest destiny of their cause. In contrast, the Central European Naturists eschewed all aspects of modern society, including clothing. The settlers developed a unique and complex language that blended elements of American Sign Language, English and French.[2]

Succession Wars[edit]

The Explorer Corps division of ComStar discovered Farhome in July 2989 and were surprised to find humans inhabiting the caves and forests near their landing site. After conducting several weeks of exploration on the surface of Farhome, the Explorer Corps party discovered the remains of an ancient DropShip and from that discovery were able to learn more of the primitive inhabits of Farhome. ComStar discovered that the local community—described as the people of the Montag Caves—were descendants of the Naturists, who had arrived on Farhome in the first years of hyperspace travel, but while the Explorer Corps did make contact with the people of the Montag Caves, they soon chose to leave Farhome after convincing the local population that they were neither gods nor representatives of an evil force.[1]

The Dark Age[edit]

When large volumes of ComStar documents were shared publicly after the founding of the Republic of the Sphere, the Republic government contracted Interstellar Expeditions to launch a new mission to Farhome under the auspices of the Millennium Foundation Trust, one of the entities within the overall Interstellar Expeditions family. This expedition arrived in the Farhome system in June 3088, and charted the system after deploying FIGYEL satellites.[1]

The initial deployment, IE MFT Farhome Mission I, confirmed that there wasn't a technologically advanced presence in the system, and provided the justification for IE to receive an expanded contract from the Republic of the Sphere for studies in the system. Operating under the Republic's mandate, IE began establishing the University of Past and Future, a platform for academic research across all disciplines, intended to perform research without being influenced by commercial interests.[1]

The second IE deployment, IE MFT Farhome Mission II, confirmed that Farhome could be isolated as a research station as there was no evidence of the Minnesota Tribe having visited the system, allowing Farhome to be excluded from the "Grand Tour" endeavors conducted by other divisions of IE. Under Farhome Mission II the Millennium Foundation Trust established Camp Omega as the location for the University of Past and Future, as well as setting up Camps Beta, Eta, Zeta and Theta, and in 3095 was preparing to deploy Camp Alpha on the location of the original Explorer Corps landing. The various vehicles and IndustrialMechs used by the MFT personnel on Farhome were all controlled by the Farhome Executive Corps at this point, located in Base Camp Omega.[1]

Due to be deployed in 3095 or soon after, Farhome Mission III would mark the official inauguration of the University of Past and Future, staffing more than twenty departments and conducting extensive research in a number of fields.[1]

Initial studies by MFT indicated that the population of the Montag Caves were unusual, in that the population was largely sedentary, unlike the majority of hunter-gatherers. The community wasn't orientated around kinship, and could be easily penetrated by other communities. The community was also prone to predation by the apex predator population of Céleste (lézard de tonnerre), which resembled ancient Terran therapods. The community had a relatively flat internal hierarchy, with three distinct leadership figures: the strongest hunstman, who guided the tribe in action; a female cleric, who guided the faith to "biendieu", and a hereditary storyteller responsible for preserving the aural history of both the tribe and Farhome as a whole. Both the position of cleric and storyteller were herditary, and the cleric was the only member of the tribe to use pictorial depictions of characters and events from the history and myths of the tribe.[2]

MFT believed that the Naturists had stopped using text as a means of recording information, along with eschewing modern technology, and this inability to preserve information in any form other than an oral tradition had played a key part in the societal degeneration the population had undergone. MFT was endeavoring to make contact with other communities across Farhome, although it was believed that the geographic distribution of the population made contact between groups and communities infrequent. Much to MFT's surprise, the population of Farhome had apparently been approximately 12,000 people when the planet was first settled, and that figure appeared to have remain relatively static throughout the history of Farhome.[2]

Among the studies due to be conducted by MFT was a detailed archeological investigation to try and learn how the original settlers—purported to be made up of some 3,000 families—had been transported to Farhome, given that the remains of the single ancient DropShip found by ComStar lacked the capacity to carry more than ten thousand people to the planet in a single trip.[2]

The Republic of the Sphere was primarily concerned with safeguarding Farhome and maintained a Vengeance-class fighter carrier in the system with standing aerospace support to provide the IE expeditions with political and military legitimacy—and leverage. In addition to the support provided by the Republic, both the mission and the University enjoyed academic respectability. Farhome attracted increasing levels of external interest during the 3090s as knowledge of the system spread, with some looking to enjoy hunting opportunities akin to those found on Hunter's Paradise—although without quite the same degree of danger. Intrusions into the system that hadn't been sanctioned by the Republic or IE were routinely challenged by the deployed aerospace forces.[2]

Geography[edit]

Farhome has two primary continents: a massive northern continent named Céleste and a smaller continent in the southern hemisphere named Farhome Bravo. Céleste stretches across the equator, and the equator itself is defined by a titanic mountain range known as the Clarisse range. The Clarisse range forms a natural border toward the southern shores, and in a notable oddity, the upper regions of the Clarisse range are warmer on average than the lower regions of Farmhome. While Céleste hosts most of the land flora and fauna found on Farhome, Farhome Bravo is more arid. The oceans on Farhome are shallow in places, and as a result Farhome has a number of idyllic archipelagos that are home to populations of avians, but Farhome has a huge biodiversity of life, resembling prehistoric Terra. The equatorial and polar temperatures on Farhome are slightly higher than those of Terra, and Farhome also has a slightly higher percentage of water on the surface by comparison, as well as minimal aridity and notable tectonic stability. In many ways, Farhome resembles paradise.[1]

Planetary Locations[edit]

  • Camp Alpha: due to be constructed at some point after 3095, Camp Alpha was due to be the site of light facilities located on the site of the original ComStar Explorer Corps landing near the Montag Caves on Céleste.[1]
  • Camp Beta: a meteorological monitoring station, located on Farhome Bravo.[1]
  • Camp Eta: a marine station located on an island on Farhome.[1]
  • Camp Omega: located on the northeast outliers of the Clarisse Ranges, approximately 800 km from the Montag Caves. Camp Omega was home to the main Interstellar Expeditions research facilities on Farhome, as well as the bulk of the IE housing. Camp Omega was also the site of the Farhome Executive Corps and the planetary spaceport.[1]
  • Camp Theta: a marine station located on an island on Farhome.[1]
  • Camp Zeta: a marine station located on an island on Farhome.[1]
