Eight Nine Three is a short story by Steven Mohan Jr. that was published online on BattleCorps on 30 November 2004. It was later also included in the first BattleCorps print anthology, The Corps.
The title is derived from a losing hand in the traditional card game of Ochi-Kabu from which the yakuza had taken its name.

Plot summary[edit]
Following the defeat of the 1st and 2nd Ghost Regiments on Altais, yakuza MechWarrior Hikotoro Yamashita (from the 1st Ghost) carries on fighting. Playing a dangerous shell game, he contacts the House Steiner Port Commissioner to set up a smuggler ring, all the while expecting to be uncovered as a yakuza operative. He "yields" information about his resistance cell, then escapes captivity after suggesting that the Lyran operations at the DropPort were sabotaged.
The betrayal of the resistance cell does not sit well with his superior, Tai-sa Ikeda, who is prepared to shoot Yamashita for his betrayal. Yamashita explains that he used being a suspected resistance fighter to plant the idea with the Lyrans that they had been sabotaged, which has resulted in them inspecting every single one of their numerous cargo containers (Altair was used as a staging point) for sabotage that in truth does not exist, throwing a spanner in the Lyran logistics. In this way, Yamashita claims he alone has halted the entire FedCom advance for a week for the lives of only five operatives whom he sacrificed to maintain credibility.
