BattleTechWiki talk:Project Unfinished Book

Style Note: Mission Status reports[edit]

Mission Status reports, as compiled by the Project Lead, are determined by page completions. As each assignment has three team members assigned, and as each team member finishes his assignment, the respective pages of the targeted title are considered completed. In other words, if a title has 21 pages of material, and the Research Writer completes his assignment of 2 pages, but neither the Fact Checker nor the Copy-editor have done so, the project would be at 3% completion.

Example: A 21-page article has 63 'pages' of assignments: 21 for the Research Writer, 21 for the Fact Checker and 21 for the Copy-editor. With 2 'completed' pages from the Research Writer, the mission is at 3% (2/63=0.031746, rounded to 3). If all three members of the team have completed the same 2-page assignment, then the mission is at 10% complete (6/63=0.095238, rounded to 10).

Copy-editor Training: Doneve[edit]

Okay, if a Research Writer reports to the Fact Checker, then both of them report to the Copy-editor. The Copy-editor must be and remain familiar with the BattleTechWiki: Manual of Style and ensure that the Writer conforms to those standards. For that to happen, you have to understand how the Writer and Checker work together. In that regard, I'm going to have you practice a little source research yourself.

Open up your copy of Jihad Turning Points: Luthien to page 6. (If you don't have JTP:L, let me know to which of the Turning Points you do have access.) In the "Combatants" section, look for "1st Genyosha [Samurai]". Within that short 19-line entry there are 13 different subjects that are relevant to the article (in order of appearance): 1st Genyosha, 3067, Shih Chou, Hohiro Kurita II, Tharkad, 14th Sun Zhang Academy Cadre, 3068, Sorenson's Sabres, Luthien, 3071, Chandrasekhar Kurita, Arcturus and 3073. A PUB team member understanding the material may find additional articles that are directly relevant to this. The first one that comes to my mind is Battle of Luthien (3067).

If you understand how I found these subjects, I want you to try it. On the same page, find the entry "Sathen's Snipers". I want you to list all relevant subjects addressed in the Snipers' entry, just as I did for "1st Genyosha [Samurai]". List those in your response. --Revanche (talk|contribs) 17:19, 27 November 2010 (UTC)

Okidoky the UBP ball is rolling, thanks for this little guideline. At 1st i have access to all JTP books, and 2nd this is the list you wanted.
Very good job! Some notes: 1) Black Dragons redirects to Kokuryu-kai, so it would be an unnecessary assignment for a Research Writer; 2) Luthien is of critical importance, since the actions all took place there, and Battle of Luthien (3067) is definitely relevant.
Okay, your next assignment is to write at least one sentence for each of those subjects. For example:
  • 3073: Sathen's Snipers depart Luthien due to battle fatigue.
  • Illuminada Kesteel: Illuminada Kesteel was the commanding officer of Sathen's Snipers while they served under contract to the Kokuryu-kai and then the Word of Blake.
If you have questions, please ask. Have fun!--Revanche (talk|contribs) 18:52, 27 November 2010 (UTC)
I work on next day on this.Greetings--Doneve 19:13, 27 November 2010 (UTC)

  • 3067: The Word of Blake starts the Luthien campaign.
  • 3071: Sathen's Snipers captured by the 9th Division (Word of Blake).
  • 9th Division (Word of Blake): The 9th and Sathen's Snipers depart Luthien due to battle fatigue.
  • Sathen's Snipers: Contracted to the Black Dragons, the Sniper's have a shadow contract.
  • Word of Blake: The Luthien campaign begins.
  • Kokuryu-kai: The Black Dragons society invaded Luthien.
  • Luthien: In 3067 the Black Dragons invaded Luthien.
  • Battle of Luthien (3067): In 3067 the Kokuryu-kai starts their coup, to capture Luthien.

Doneve, I didn't want to interrupt, so apologies. Please let me know when you're done, ok? --Revanche (talk|contribs) 12:21, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
Ok, i think it is done!--Doneve 12:32, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
Errrr....eleven articles, right? I did two and you did 4 so far.--Revanche (talk|contribs) 12:43, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
Ups, you're right ;).---Doneve 12:54, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
Ok, one subject is missing, the Black Dragons, but you talk to me it is a redirect, i think iam done.--Doneve 13:07, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
Excellent work, Doneve. I'll start work on the next phase of training, since you understand fact checking. --Revanche (talk|contribs) 12:33, 1 December 2010 (UTC)

Copy-editor Training: Wrangler[edit]

Okay, Wrangler: the Fact Checker's job is to double-check that the Research Writer has not left important information out of the articles nor that any relevant articles have been missed. One of the best ways to do that is to give the writer a list of articles he believes the writer should include in that particular assignment.

On the same page, find the entry "Otomo/Izanagi Warriors [Samuari]". I want you to list all relevant subjects addressed in the Snipers' entry, just as I did for "1st Genyosha [Samurai]". List those in your response.--Revanche (talk|contribs) 12:21, 30 November 2010 (UTC)

Black Dragons - Undercontract by them to assault Luthiern
Luthien - Capital of the Draconis Combine and target of the Sniper's contract
Major Illuminada Kesteel - Commanding Officer of Snipers
2nd Sword of Light (Kokuryu-kai) Unit that Snipers were attached by the Black Dragon Society
Tai-sa Li Sak To - Commanding officer of the 2nd Sword of Light
2nd Sword of Light (Samurai) - Loyalist to Coordinator and fought the Snipers in the initial assault.
Otomo / Izanagi Warriors (Samuari) - Guard units to the Coordinator and first targets of Sniper when the 2nd Sword made it move take the Imperial city in 3068.
Sho-sho Sajori Mitsotisa - Commanding Officer of the suviving combined Otomo and Izanagi Warriors.
Franklin Sakamoto - Infantry Commander of Otomo and son of Theodore Kurita is captured in action with the Snipers.
3071 - Unit is captured by Word of Blake 9th Division and placed under contract with them as security force.
9th Division (Word of Blake) - WoB division came in to bring peace to fighting sides, they later capture the Snipers
Precentor Alice Phuong - Commanding Officer of the 9th Division., Later replaced in 3072 with William Nikoli.
Ruins of LAW City, Tokyo Island on Luthien - Site of Snipers last major battle on planet in 3069 before being relieved.
32nd Division (Word of Blake) - Word of Blake Division brought in to relieve the Snipers in 3073.
Thats what i found, 14 of them. I'm not sure i'm catching on what i'm suppose to do with this. -- Wrangler 14:24, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
I really screwed you up by saying 'Snipers' instead of 'Otomo' & 'Izanagi Warriors'. My apologies. I'll try to re-direct rather than re-task to the original intended assignment.
The purpose of the first part is to have two people (Research Writer & Fact Checker) independently determine what subjects are relevant to the assignment. If you're working as my Fact Checker, I'll compare your list to mine, to ensure I didn't miss any. The second part (assigning a fact to each subject), is to get you to see how the Research Writer develops his facts.
One point to make...the UBP is only concerned with the facts from the assignment. For example, no where does is make mention of Franklin Sakamoto in either the Otomo or Snipers' entries on page 6. As a research team, we're only trying to put down info exactly as the target source (JTP:L) provides. While it is true that Sakamoto was captured in action by the Snipers, he is not mentioned in the assignment limited to page 6. Does that make sense? --Revanche (talk|contribs) 12:44, 1 December 2010 (UTC)

Expansion[edit]

Hy Rev, i want to push my factchecking in the unfinisedbook category and want to bring minor fluff writing on top, and want to make my red links on the New Avalon page blue, as second i want to create this entiress <planetary city> and <continent> as a stub , and following your JTP:Luthien way, i hope we can bring the Unfinishedbook Project up to flow, not as stub articles, but there are some minor infos in the various sources.--Doneve 21:33, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
