--- I asked myself, "What kind of 'Mech would I want to pilot if I was a Spheroid Mech Jock in 3025?" This, was the answer. I have always loved the Hunchback, but felt it lacked two things: Range & Armor. The Hurtback gives me that range, and two and half tons of armor. Plus, at 75 Tons it is a fearsome heavy mech.

Marauder with 2 more medium lasers, 6 bonus heatsinks, and an extra ton of armor. No AC/5, sad Elemental face

Now, you mention a Hunchback. In keeping with the theme of autocannons, you can put 2 AC/10 with 20 shots total, 4 medium lasers and that extra ton of armor.

Not sure what you were talking about with the AC/10s, but I went ahead and built a Hurtback II. It is an AC/10 variant that has shorter range than the original, runs hotter overall, and introduces an element of ammo dependency. I would prefer my Heavyback over this version, if I wanted a ballistic version. You can find it here on the Design forums; I'd link it but links aren't working for me last time I checked and I don't care to check again.

However, it is a bit cheaper. Autocannons and their ammo tend to be lower tech, easier to make and thus easier to source. PPCs tend to be harder to fix than Autocannons as I understand it, so technicians to repair the original would cost you more. Add in the fact that there was a shortage of PPCs at one point in the Inner Sphere's history and this ends up being an interesting variant.

Here's the Autocannon variant:

Actually, I thought Warhammer. Specifically the extremely similar WHM-6D. (2 PPC, 2 ML, 2 SL, 20 heat sinks, and full armor). It has the Marauder's weight, but the equipment layout is much more in line with the WHM-6D.

The original Hurtback should probably switch the ppcs with the mls, to give them a bit wider firing arcs, as well as force the pilot to avoid using them at physical range. The mls are better for that. It makes it look more like others, but it works as is.

The II looks solid enough without changes.

I would be interested in seeing a 3050 or SL updated versions of both. The II could definitely use some double sinks, though unless you go er with the original, it isn't as necessary, though would help alot.
